Here is what citizens told us
As with most school districts across Oregon, Reynolds faced cuts in its budget because of reductions in state funding for K-12 education. When it came to major policy questions, residents said they preferred to cut funding by:
- Shortening the school year five to 10 days;
- Eliminating special classes for Talented and Gifted (TAG) students at elementary grade level;
- Changing from a five-day to four-day school week;
- Delaying purchasing new science textbooks for one year; and
- Eliminating district-matching funds for outdoor school.
Residents also agreed that the district should consider contracting out some support services to the private sector and tightening rules to limit student transfers to other school districts.
As it turned out, cuts were not as deep as expected, but some of these ideas were incorporated in the 2011-2012 budget.
